The Montserrat massif is a small paradise of conglomerate rock just a few kilometers from Barcelona — an idyllic spot to get started with long multi-pitch routes. The Gorros area, in particular, has a large number of routes at accessible grades, quick and easy access, and a relatively simple descent.
The four characteristic Gorros in this area are La Gorra Marinera, Magdalena Inferior, Magdalena Superior, and Gorro Frigi.
There are several ways to reach this area of Montserrat. The easiest by far is the Sant Joan funicular, which drops you almost at the foot of the Gorros — from there, just follow the Sant Geroni path for 10–15 minutes. A cheaper option is the Escaleras de los Pobres path, about 40 minutes on foot.
Here's a list of four relatively easy long routes for practicing rope systems and multi-pitch concepts. Keep in mind that climbing a long route safely requires specific technical knowledge — if you don't feel ready to attempt these routes unsupervised, we recommend joining one of our multi-pitch courses or booking a guide to climb with you. We'll make sure you learn everything you need to come back and climb these routes on your own.
Gorra Marinera — Vía Sargantes (IV+, 180m)
Magdalena Inferior — Rataplan (V-, 90m)
Magdalena Superior — Vía 98 Octanos (6a, 140m)
Gorro Frigi — Vía Carles (V+, 180m)
Descent — All of these summits are descended by rappel.
Planning — If you've already taken one of our courses, you know how important it is to plan your outings properly. That includes checking the weather, choosing a route suited to your level and physical condition, bringing the right gear, and gathering information about access and descent, among other things.
