VIA PATXARAN, VENTAMILLO GORGE
A quick morning of climbing on an ultra-classic, must-do route in the Ventamillo Gorge.
A quick morning of climbing on an ultra-classic, must-do route in the Ventamillo Gorge.
Via Patxaran is located on the central wall of the Ventamillo Gorge. It's a sport-style route, well-bolted with parabolts, and all of its pitches are excellent, with the 4th pitch (6c) standing out in particular.
From the parking lot (right before the tunnel), walk toward Benasque, being very careful along the road, until you see the small metal bridge that crosses the river. Once you cross the river, follow the path to the base of the route.
Difficulty: 7a (6b Oblg)
Gear needed: 18 quickdraws (a few slings for the anchor at the top)
Length: 175 m
Approach: 10 minutes
Descent: Ventamillo rappels (5 rappels with a single 70 m rope)
L1 - 6b/+ - A great warm-up pitch with fairly technical moves.
L2 - 7a - A slightly bouldery finish and one technical move, then easier terrain.
L3 - 6c+ - An athletic, powerful pitch up an overhanging crack. Excellent.
L4 - 6c - The standout pitch of the route. A technical dihedral with very exposed moves. Brutal.
L5 - 6a - A bit dirty.
Excellent route, super classic. Ideal for a summer afternoon. The sun hits the wall for almost the entire morning. Pitches 3 and 4 are excellent. You could rappel down the route itself by managing the rappels correctly, but if you top out, it's better to descend via the Ventamillo rappels. As soon as you reach the summit, walk to your left following a faint path and you'll see a cairn marking the start of the rappels.
