MULTI-PITCH CLIMBING ON NARANJO DE BULNES (PICU URRIELLU)

Discover the main multi-pitch routes on Picu Urriellu (Naranjo de Bulnes), from the accessible Sur Directa to the legendary Rabadá-Navarro. Difficulty grades, two-day logistics and the gear you need to climb with certified guides.

Picu Urriellu, better known as Naranjo de Bulnes, isn't just an iconic peak in the Picos de Europa: it's also home to some of the most demanding multi-pitch climbing in Spain. Climbing its limestone walls multi-pitch style is a different game from a sport climbing day in Siurana or Margalef: a full day's approach, a night at a high-mountain hut, and a technical multi-pitch ascent with belay stations, rappels and real commitment. This article focuses solely on multi-pitch climbing on the Urriellu: which routes exist for each level, how the two-day logistics work, and what gear you'll need.

What does multi-pitch climbing on Naranjo de Bulnes involve?

Unlike a multi-pitch route in Montserrat or the Congosto de Ventamillo, here the high-mountain factor comes into play: you need to hike up to the Vega de Urriellu hut, above 1,950 metres, carrying technical gear, spend the night there, and start early to tackle the wall in the best conditions. The rock is compact limestone, with pitches that combine cracks, slabs and the occasional stretch of aid climbing on the harder routes. This isn't a beginner activity: you should be comfortable multi-pitch climbing at grade 5+/6a, although with a certified guide the trip can be adapted to climbers with less mountain experience but a solid climbing level.

The multi-pitch routes on the Urriellu, by level

There are about half a dozen established lines on the wall, but four define the classic multi-pitch progression here. Sur Directa (IV+, 200 metres) is the most accessible, a great first taste of multi-pitch climbing on the Urriellu. Cepeda, opened in 1955 on the east face (300 metres, V+ with mandatory IV+ moves), is the route SouthClimb uses for its guided ascents thanks to its solid belay stations and varied climbing across slabs, cracks and corners. For more experienced climbers, the historic Pidal-Cainejo (500 metres, V+), first climbed in 1904 by the mountain's first ascensionists, offers a long, exposed line. At the harder end sits the legendary Rabadá-Navarro (750 metres, 6c) on the west face, considered the Urriellu's great route for its length and commitment, alongside more modern and harder lines such as Murciana 78 (500 m, 6b/A2) or Leiva (500 m, 7a+), reserved for very capable parties.

The real logistics of a two-day ascent

The usual way to climb any of these routes is on a two-day trip. The first day involves hiking up from Collado de Pandébano (accessible by car from Sotres or Bulnes) to the Vega de Urriellu hut — a 2 to 3 hour approach that also helps with acclimatisation and gear checks. The hut, which sleeps around 90 people, works on a reservation basis, and it's worth booking ahead in high season. The second day starts before dawn to approach the wall, climb the chosen route and descend by rappelling down the same line or a dedicated descent route, before conditions worsen in the afternoon. Hiring a certified guide takes care of all this logistics: booking the hut, choosing the route based on conditions and the group's level, and carrying the shared gear.

Gear and technical skills you need

A route on the Naranjo de Bulnes is not a first multi-pitch outing. You need a solid trad and multi-pitch rack (cams, nuts, quickdraws), two half ropes, a helmet, and — depending on the route — a few pitons and a hammer for older lines. Beyond gear, the skills that matter most are efficient belay changeovers, building anchors quickly, route-finding on featured limestone, and rappelling with confidence, since a fast, competent party is also a safer one on a wall of this size. If you haven't consolidated these skills yet, joining a guided ascent or taking a multi-pitch course beforehand is the smartest way to prepare.

Best season for multi-pitch climbing on the Naranjo de Bulnes

The main season runs from June to September, once the winter snow has cleared from the approach and the rock has dried out. July and August offer the longest, most stable weather windows, though they also bring more crowds to the hut and the classic routes — early starts help you get ahead of other parties. June and September can be excellent too, with cooler temperatures and fewer people, as long as you check the forecast carefully, since afternoon storms are common in the Picos de Europa in summer and snow can still linger on shaded sections early in the season.

At SouthClimb we guide multi-pitch routes on the Naranjo de Bulnes such as the Vía Cepeda, adapting the choice of line to your level and experience, and we also run multi-pitch and self-rescue courses to help you build the skills you need to take on this kind of route with confidence. If the Picu Urriellu is on your list, get in touch and we'll help you plan the safest, most enjoyable way to climb it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need previous multi-pitch experience to climb the Naranjo de Bulnes? Yes. This isn't a beginner objective — you should already be comfortable leading or seconding multi-pitch routes, managing rope work, and building anchors. If you're not there yet, a guided course is the best way to get ready before attempting it.

Do I need to book the Vega de Urriellu hut in advance? Yes, especially in July and August. The hut works on a reservation system and gets busy in high season, so it's best to book as soon as you have a date, particularly if you're planning to climb with a guide on a specific weekend.

What's the easiest multi-pitch route on the Naranjo de Bulnes? The Rabadá-Cerredo (Vía del Oso), around 6a, and the Vía Cepeda are generally considered the most approachable options for solid multi-pitch climbers taking on the Urriellu for the first time, offering good rock and a well-established line without the sustained difficulty of the harder routes.

(Translated by Google) Santi and the entire team of professionals who work with him are incredible... if I had to choose one word it would be EXCELLENCE. transmits so much security, that you only receive fun and learning. He is warm, human, ready to solve any unforeseen event. Start the day with a guide and end with a friend. He also advises you before the activity, and also after... You can write to him a month later and he will help you buy a harness, or he will give you a discount on climbing shoes. Is incredible. He is very passionate, you can see that despite the 25 years he has been dedicating himself to this, he still has that spark, that enthusiasm, and he transmits it. I honestly recommend it.
